Jharkhand News: Three women killed, four injured while digging soil in Baharagora

Jamshedpur, April 10: Three women were buried alive and four other women were injured as a chunk of soil they were digging at collapsed in Matihana panchayat under Baharagora thana area in the East Singhbhum district about 100 kms away from here on Wednesday afternoon.

The victims were residents of Paniakhudar village under Bhutia panchayat and had come to the adjoining Matihana panchayat’s Kokmara village to collect the soil today when the mishap took place.

Police retrieve all by pressing excavators

All seven victims had come to the Kokmara village to collect the soil which is very suitable for giving a quote on the walls of their houses, something they used to do every year around this period of the year.

As soon as the news of the women being buried under the heap of soil spread in the area, Baharagora thana OC, Vikash Kumar Sharma and Circle Officer, Bhola Shankar Mahto rushed to the spot and retrieved them all by pressing excavators. But unfortunately, three of the victims were already dead.

The police officers had, however, taken all seven victims to the Baharagora Community Health Centre where the doctor on emergency duty declared the three as brought dead.

Condition of four injured stable

The Baharagora thana OC, Vikash Kumar Sharma said the four injured women who survived the tragedy are undergoing treatment at the local community health centre where their condition is said to be stable.

“From preliminary investigation, it appeared that those killed had run a risk by digging deep into the chunk of the soil, without paying attention to the safety aspect, ” said Sharma while talking to The Jharkhand Story.

Later, the local legislator, Samir Mohanty went over to the spot and also met the bereaved family members having gone over to their houses. The legislator also assured the victims’ family of arranging for the necessary compensation from the Jharkhand government as soon as possible.
