Cannes, May 25: Anasuya Sengupta has achieved a remarkable feat by being the first Indian actor to win the coveted Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival.

Her outstanding performance in “The Shameless,” a gripping movie that was a contender in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival’s 77th edition, earned her this historic accomplishment.

“This is for the queer community everywhere, and all other marginalized communities all over the world, for bravely fighting a fight they shouldn’t have to fight,” said Anasuya on receiving the award.

“More female gaze is the way forward, and the browner the better,” she further stated.

Filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov, from Bulgaria, directed ‘The Shameless,’ in which Kolkata native Anasuya Sengupta gave a remarkable performance as Renuka.

The film portrays Renuka’s intense and transformative journey as she escapes a Delhi brothel after killing a police officer, and explores her complicated relationship with her love interest.

Apart from this, two Indian films also won awards in the La Cinef Selection at Cannes 2024.

The Kannada short film “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know,” directed by Chidananda Naik, a student at the Film and Television Institute of India, won first place.

Whereas, “Bunnyhood,” directed by Mansi Maheshwari from Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, who is presently studying in the UK, earned third place.
