Chennai, July 6: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday expressed condolences for the murder of Bahujan Samajwadi Party leader K. Armstrong in Chennai on Saturday, stating that he has instructed the police to speed up the investigation. The BSP state president was killed by a motorcycle-borne gang late on Friday night.

The 52-year-old Armstrong, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) state chief and a former Chennai Corporation councillor, was brutally hacked to death by a six-member gang near his home late on Friday.

Eight suspects arrested

In a tweet expressing his condolences, Stalin said he was deeply saddened and shocked by the murder of BSP leader Armstrong.

“Bahujan Samaj Party State President Mr. Armstrong’s assassination is shocking and deeply saddening. The police arrested those involved in the murder overnight,” Stalin posted on X adding that “I would like to convey my deepest condolences to all of Armstrong’s party members, family, relatives, and friends who are bereaved, and I have ordered the police officers to conduct the case expeditiously and bring the culprits to justice as per the law”.

The police have apprehended at least eight suspects related to the murder. They have formed 10 special teams under Additional Police Commissioner Asra Garg (Chennai North) to investigate the case.

Mayawati demands strict action

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati stated that she is planning to visit Chennai tomorrow to pay her respects to the murdered leader.

“Considering the seriousness of this extremely sad and worrying incident, I am planning to go to Chennai tomorrow morning to pay my tributes to Mr. Armstrong, meet his grieving family and console them. I appeal to all to maintain peace and order,” Mayawati posted on X.

The BSP chief also demanded the Tamil Nadu government to take prompt action.

“The brutal murder of a hardworking and dedicated leader of the BSP in Tamil Nadu and the state party unit president Shri K. Armstrong outside his Chennai residence yesterday evening has sent shockwaves across society. The government should immediately take strict/necessary action to prevent such incidents in the future,” she stated.

BSP workers protest in Chennai

In the meantime, BSP workers in Chennai protested against the murder of their state president. They held a roadblock in front of Rajiv Gandhi Medical College Hospital and other locations, demanding that the Central Bureau of Investigation take over the case.
