Dhanbad, July 26: Senior residents of the state deployed in six medical colleges are on the boil over a letter from Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH), anaesthesia department, regarding their private practice.

They have expressed anger over a letter issued by the Anaesthesia Department HoD Prof (Dr) CD Ram. The letter mandates senior and junior residents (non-academic) to give written information on the 30th day of every month whether they do private practice out of campus or not.

SNMMCH Principal says no info on letter

SNMMCH Principal Dr Jyotiranjan Prasad, who holds additional charge of superintendent also, when contacted, said that he has no information about the letter and can make comments only after getting information.

Junior Doctors Network to meet health dept officials

The Junior Doctors Network (JDN), the frontal organisation of senior residents deployed at RIMS Ranchi, MGMMCH Jamshedpur, SNMMCH Dhanbad and other three new medical colleges, has strongly protested the letter and said that a delegation would soon meet concerned senior officials of the health department on the issue.

“Senior residents get a low honorarium of Rs 72,000 only and do not get Non-Practice Allowance (NPA) to survive. Moreover, no department of other colleges of state has issued such a letter which the SNMMCH anaesthesia department has done. So, the JDN is studying the letter and would chalk out a programme to protest,” said Dr Raghvnedra Kumar Singh, secretary of the state body.

Dr Ram’s stand

However, Dr CD Ram said that he has issued a letter at the local level.

“I don’t have detailed rules and regulations for senior residents and junior residents (non-academic).  I know they are residential doctors which means they will have to be available all 24 hours in the hospital and can’t do private practice out of the hospital during the period. So, I have sought information from them to inform me in writing every month whether they do practice out of the college hospital,” Dr Ram maintained.

He said he must have information about the out-of-campus activities (private practice) of senior residents so that in case medical-legal cases appear he can reply to higher authorities.
