THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, Nov 18: The Lok Sabha has more than 700 private members’ bills awaiting consideration, with a significant number of them proposing amendments to penal provisions and electoral laws.

Several of these bills were presented in June 2019 when the current Lok Sabha was established after the parliamentary elections. Additionally, some were introduced as recently as August of this year during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Private member bills are those bills which are put forward by MPs in their personal capacity. The intent behind introducing a private bill is to spotlight new laws that they believe should be enacted or to advocate for necessary modifications in existing statutes.

As per a Lok Sabha bulletin released on Friday, there are 713 such bills awaiting consideration in the Lower House.

These bills address a range of issues, including the implementation of a uniform civil code, gender equality, climate change, agriculture, amendments to existing criminal and electoral laws, and modifications to constitutional provisions.

During Parliament sessions, the latter part of Fridays is designated for members to present or deliberate on private members’ bills or resolutions in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

After the conclusion of a debate on a private member’s bill, the respective minister responds and typically requests the member to withdraw it.
