PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Sept 16:  The prevailing deep depression over the Gangetic West Bengal will trigger heavy rain at several places today.

The deep depression lay centred about 60 km west of Kolkata (West Bengal), 110 km southeast of Bankura (West Bengal), 170 km east of Jamshedpur and 270 Km east-southeast of Ranchi.

It was moving westwards across Gangetic West Bengal.

Weathermen today said it is likely to weaken gradually into a depression and move nearly westwards across Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh during the subsequent 24 hours.

Monsoon was vigorous over the state for the last two days.

The monsoon trough at mean sea level was today passing through Firozpur, Patiala, Shahjahanpur, Balia, the centre of Deep depression over Gangetic West Bengal and thence south-southeastwards to northeast Bay of Bengal.

Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms was observed at most places over the state during the past 24 hours while heavy to very heavy rainfall was also observed at isolated places over the state.

According to a forecast issued by IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre, very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over north-western parts of the state today.

Heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at isolated places over western and north-western parts of the state today.

Meanwhile, heavy rains continued in Jamshedpur and several other parts across the state for the second consecutive day today.

Statistics revealed that Jamshedpur recorded around 101 mm of rain during the past 24 hours while Latehar recorded 106 mm.

Chaibasa in West Singhbhum recorded around 67 mm of rain while Bokaro recorded 60 mm.

Daltonganj recorded 52 mm of rain while Ranchi recorded around 40 mm.

Most places in the Kolhan region experienced overnight rains.

Rainwater inundated several low-lying areas and water levels increased in both rivers, Subernarekha and Kharkai.

The good spell of rain brought down the state’s rain deficit to 11 per cent from 15 per cent in the last 48 hours.
