THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

New Delhi, Oct 17: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud has formally proposed Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the Supreme Court’s second-most senior judge, to succeed him.

In correspondence with the Union government, Chief Justice Chandrachud mentioned that he will be retiring on November 10 and that Justice Khanna should take over as his successor.

The letter follows the tradition where the outgoing Chief Justice of India nominates the second-most senior judge as a successor, and the Union government subsequently approves the recommendation.

Justice Chandrachud assumed the position of Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022. Supreme Court judges retire upon reaching the age of 65.
