Dhanbad, Nov 10: The Dhanbad police seized Rs  2.3 lakh from a car of a Gorakhpur resident at  Chirkunda check post near the Jharkhand- West Bengal border under Chirkunda police station, around  45 km away from district headquarters during the wee hours of Sunday.

Chirkunda police station officer-in-charge Ramji Roy told media persons that the Scorpio car was going from Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh) to Kolkata. In the course of routine checking of vehicles in the wake of assembly elections, the special team under magistrate Pankaj Kumar Singh deployed at the check post searched the car and recovered the cash.

Police officials said Viplav Mandal, who was carrying the cash, did not give a convincing answer about carrying such a large amount with valid paper. “So, police and the SST team seized the cash and handed it over to the squad deployed by the district election committee for screening,” they added.
