Dhanbad, Dec 2: A team of surgeons and specialist doctors from the state government-owned Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) in Dhanbad successfully conducted a rare spine cancer operation, adding another achievement to the institution’s record.

The patient, Kranti Devi (42), was admitted on November 29 with a tumour located outside the spinal cord, specifically at the D3-5 level. The surgery, involving tumour excision from the spine, was performed successfully within three hours.

Team behind the success

The surgery was conducted by neurosurgeon Dr Rajesh Singh, with support from pathologists and oncologists who removed cancer from other areas of the body.

The core team included Orthopaedics Department Head Prof (Dr) DP Bhushan, Dr Amit Kumar, anaesthetists Dr Deeksha, Dr Piyush Sengar, and Dr BK Pandey from the blood bank. Senior doctors, including Prof (Dr) UK Ojha (Head of the Medicine Department) and Dr L Gindauria, provided additional backup to the team.

Significant milestone for SNMMCH

The operation was carried out under the Ayushman package for neurosurgery and orthopaedics. Dr DP Bhushan, HoD of Orthopaedics, highlighted that Kranti Devi became the first patient to benefit from the Super Speciality wing of SNMMCH.

He proudly stated, “After this successful critical operation, I can now claim that neurosurgery is fully functional at the Super Speciality wing of SNMMCH, and we can operate on patients more often.”

Praise for the medical team

SNMMCH Principal Dr KK Lal commended the medical team for their successful performance and emphasized that the achievement would bolster public confidence in the hospital’s services and doctors.

Dr Bhushan further mentioned that the first spinal surgery at SNMMCH was performed in 1998 on the father of the then Head of Medicine, Dr SK Sinha. Since then, numerous spinal surgeries have been successfully performed at the hospital.
