Chandigarh, Jan 30: In a dramatic turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victory in the Chandigarh mayoral election, defeating the alliance of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress.
BJP candidate Harpreet Kaur Babla emerged victorious against AAP’s Premlata, securing 19 votes against her opponent’s 17. Despite the numerical advantage favoring the AAP-Congress alliance, the BJP managed to overturn the odds and claim the mayor’s post.
Three councilors cross-voted in favour of the BJP, dealing a blow to AAP-Congress alliance.

The election was conducted under the supervision of independent observer Justice Jayshree Thakur, a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who was appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the process.
The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation mayoral election saw all 35 councilors and the city’s Member of Parliament casting their votes, making a total of 36 ballots. While all votes were accounted for, the AAP-Congress alliance suffered a defeat due to unexpected cross-voting, allowing the BJP to clinch the win.
