Gandhinagar, Feb 4: The Gujarat government has set up a five-member committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, to prepare a draft for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and formulate the law.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced on Tuesday that the committee will submit its report within 45 days, after which the state government will make its decision.

Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi provided details about the composition of the UCC committee, which includes retired senior IAS officer CL Meena, Advocate RC Kodekar, former Vice Chancellor Dakshesh Thakar, and social worker Gita Shroff, alongside Justice (retd) Ranjana Desai.

Highlighting the significance of the Constitution, Gujrarat CM Patel emphasized that it serves to uphold the duties and rights of all citizens. He also noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India is celebrating 75 years of its Constitution this year.

Modi’s vision, he added, is to implement a Common Civil Code across the country to ensure equal rights for all.

He pointed to key national reforms such as the abrogation of Article 370 and the banning of Triple Talaq as examples of promises being fulfilled.

The Chief Minister has instructed the committee to conduct an in-depth study and prepare a comprehensive report within the stipulated time frame.
