New Delhi, Feb 15: The Supreme Court is likely to hear a petition on February 21 challenging the Jharkhand High Court’s order for a CBI probe into coal theft in Dhanbad and the alleged involvement of the police.

According to the Supreme Court’s website, the case has been listed for hearing before a bench led by Justice Sandeep Mehta on that date. So far, the CBI has submitted its response in the matter.

In the last hearing on January 3, the Supreme Court rejected a petition filed by the Jharkhand government seeking to remove the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as a party in the investigation.

The first hearing of the case in the Supreme Court took place on October 18, during which the apex court stayed the Jharkhand High Court’s directive for a CBI inquiry. The stay on the CBI probe remains in effect until further orders.

Earlier, on October 3, the Jharkhand High Court ordered the CBI to investigate the police officers named as respondents in the case. This decision prompted the state government to approach the Supreme Court, challenging the High Court’s order.

With the Supreme Court’s intervention, the investigation into the alleged coal theft and police involvement in Dhanbad remains on hold for now.
