Jharkhand News: IIT ISM, BAU experts teach Jamtara tribal farmers scientific farming

Dhanbad, Feb 24: Experts from IIT ISM Dhanbad and Birsa Agriculture University (BAU) Ranchi conducted a workshop for tribal farmers in Jamtara, focusing on soil health management and plant disease control.

A day-long workshop, organized by the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering of IIT ISM, took place in Narayanpur block of Jamtara. The event, attended by around 135 farmers, focused on practical strategies for managing soil health and plant diseases.

Prof. Rashmi Singh, the principal investigator of the project, explained that the aim of the workshop was to empower local farmers with scientific knowledge to tackle critical agricultural challenges in the region. Experts provided valuable insights into enhancing soil fertility and protecting crops.

Soil Health and Plant Disease Management

Dr. Arvind Kumar, a soil expert from BAU Ranchi, gave a detailed presentation on soil health, highlighting strategies to improve soil fertility and boost agricultural productivity.

Dr. M.K. Burnwal, an expert in plant pathology, addressed the prevalent plant diseases in the region and shared the best methods to mitigate them.

The workshop was part of the ongoing project titled “Improving the Economic Well-Being of Scheduled Tribe Communities Using Game Theoretic and Operations Research Techniques in Jamtara District of Jharkhand State.”

The project aims to improve farmers’ livelihoods through better soil management, optimized cropping systems, and the effective use of fertilizers.

Rural Development and Sustainability

Prof. Niladri Das, CO-PI of the project, along with IIT ISM team members, including Deep Chaudhary, Pawan Kumar, Nilesh Kumar, Sunny, Anand Chandra Sahu, and Sumana Banerjee, also participated in the workshop.

Local leaders, including Mukhiya Premanand Marandi and Md Reman, Upmukhiya, attended and gained valuable insights into sustainable farming practices.

“This initiative reflects IIT ISM Dhanbad’s commitment to rural development and agricultural sustainability, aiming to provide local farmers with the knowledge and tools needed to improve their livelihoods,” Prof. Singh said.
