The matter stemmed from a case in which the Madhya Pradesh state government had terminated six women civil judges for alleged poor performance in November 2023.

However, after reconsideration, the Madhya Pradesh High Court reinstated four of the judges on certain conditions in August 2024, but excluded Aditi Kumar Sharma and Sarita Chaudhary from the decision.
