Ranchi, March 6: After a prolonged wait, the Jharkhand Assembly finally has a Leader of the Opposition. State BJP President Babulal Marandi was elected as the Leader of the Legislative Party on Thursday in the presence of the party’s central observers. With this appointment, Marandi officially takes on the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly. BJP MLAs congratulated him on his election to the post.
A Leadership Vacancy That Lasted Four Years
The Leader of the Opposition post in Jharkhand had remained largely vacant since 2020, barring a brief period of about eight months in 2024 when Amar Bauri was appointed to the position. The vacancy initially arose after Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) merged with the BJP in 2020. While he was expected to take on the role back then, legal and procedural hurdles delayed his appointment. The main issue was related to his formal recognition as a BJP MLA, which prevented the party from nominating him at the time.
With these hurdles now resolved, Marandi has officially assumed the post, ending the four-year-long uncertainty over the Leader of Opposition position in Jharkhand.
The BJP Parliamentary Board had appointed Union Forest and Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav and OBC Morcha National President and MP Dr. K. Laxman as central observers for this election.
Babulal Marandi: A Veteran in Jharkhand Politics
Babulal Marandi has been a dominant force in Jharkhand politics for over two decades. He made history as the state’s first Chief Minister, assuming office in 2000 after Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar. A senior BJP leader, Marandi was elected as an MP from the Koderma Lok Sabha seat in 1998, playing a crucial role in shaping Jharkhand’s early political landscape.
However, in 2006, Marandi parted ways with the BJP due to internal differences and founded his own political outfit, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik). His party remained a significant force in state politics until 2020, when he merged it back into the BJP. Following his return, the party entrusted him with the role of state BJP president, where he worked to strengthen the party’s presence across Jharkhand.
Recognizing his vast political experience, leadership skills, and strong grassroots support, the BJP has now appointed Marandi as the Leader of the Legislative Party, marking his full-fledged return to a key leadership position within the party.
With his new role, Marandi is expected to lead the opposition’s charge against the Hemant Soren-led government, holding the ruling coalition accountable on critical issues impacting Jharkhand.
