New Delhi, March 11: A heated exchange took place in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s “thokenge” comment, which sparked strong criticism from BJP National President JP Nadda. Nadda condemned Kharge’s language, accusing him of attacking the Chair and demanded an apology.

The remarks were made by Kharge while addressing Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s comments on the Tamil Nadu government’s stance on the three-language policy. Kharge, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, said, “This is a dictatorship. I request you (Deputy Chairman) with folded hands to allow me to speak. Aapko kya kya thokna hai thik se thokenge, sarkar ko bhi thokenge.”

In response, Union Minister JP Nadda condemned Kharge’s language, asking him to apologize and retract his statement. Nadda said that the language used by Kharge and the attack on the Chair is unacceptable and should apologize for these words or they should be expunged from the record.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh also expressed dissatisfaction with Kharge’s remarks, considering his seniority in the House.

In an attempt to defuse the situation, Kharge immediately clarified that his comment was directed at the government’s policies, not the Chair. He apologized to the Deputy Chairman, stating, “I apologize to you (Deputy Chairman), I have not used these words for you. I have said that ‘hum sarkar ki policies ko thokenge’. I apologise to you and not to the government.”
