Dhanbad, March 27: Sindri College, Sindri, a constituent unit of Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University, Dhanbad, commemorated the 118th birth anniversary of celebrated Hindi poet and Padma Bhushan awardee Mahadevi Verma.
The Hindi department organized a seminar on her literary journey, where teachers and students reflected on her remarkable contributions to Hindi literature.
In his inaugural address, Principal Dr. K.K. Pathak described Mahadevi Verma as a visionary poet, fearless social reformer, and a defining voice in Hindi literature. He emphasized her role in shaping modern Hindi poetry and her commitment to social change.

Remembering Mahadevi Verma’s Life and Works
Chairperson of the organizing committee and Head of the Hindi Department, Dr. Nitu Gaurav, shed light on the life of Mahadevi Verma. Born on March 26, 1907, in Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh, she inherited a deep passion for literature from her father, Govind Prasad Verma, who was a lecturer at Bhagalpur College.
Mahadevi Verma began writing poetry at the age of seven and gained recognition as an established poet by 1925. Some of her most celebrated works include Nihar, Rashmi, Nirja, Sandhyageet, Deepshikha, and Yama.
She was honored with the Bharatiya Jnanpith Award in 1982 for her outstanding contributions to literature. Her notable prose works include Path Ke Sathi, Atit Ke Chalchitra, and Smriti Ki Rekhae.

Honors and Legacy
Dr. Gaurav also highlighted Mahadevi Verma’s tenure as the principal of Prayag Mahila Vidyapith, where she played a crucial role in promoting women’s education. Recognizing her immense contributions, the Government of India conferred her with the prestigious Padma Bhushan award.
Senior faculty members, including Dr. Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Dr. Ranjit Prasad Rajak, Dr. Ankit Alok Toppo, Dr. Nishant Kumar Dubey, Dr. Puja Kumari, and Dr. Ramolo Jojo, also addressed the gathering. Students participated enthusiastically, reciting Mahadevi Verma’s poetry and performing cultural programs to pay tribute to her literary legacy.
