Massive earthquakes strike Myanmar, Bangkok declares emergency

New Delhi, March 28: Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.4 in magnitude, struck Myanmar on Friday, triggering strong tremors across the region.

As per reports, several people are feared dead in Myanmar and Thailand.

The iconic Ava Bridge in Mandalay collapsed into the Irrawaddy River, and several buildings crumbled near the epicenter in Sagaing.

The tremors were so intense that they reached all the way from Myanmar to Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.

The impact was so intense that a 30-story skyscraper under construction for government offices collapsed in northern Bangkok on Friday, leaving 43 workers trapped. Within seconds, the structure crumbled into a heap of debris and twisted metal.

People rushed out of their homes in panic, while water was seen sloshing out of rooftop pools.

In response, Bangkok authorities declared an emergency, shutting down metro services, airports, and subways. Several buildings were evacuated, and businesses remained closed.

The tremors were also felt in Thailand, China’s Yunnan province, and India’s northeastern states, including Meghalaya, which recorded aftershocks at a magnitude of 4.
