Dhanbad, April 16: IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad has inaugurated the Regional Center for Geodesy (RCG) to improve the understanding and measurement of the Earth’s geometric shape. This new facility will play a pivotal role in advancing geospatial science and technology, contributing to national development and scientific goals.

Strategic Significance of the Center

During the inauguration, Professor Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT ISM, highlighted the importance of the RCG and its associated Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS). These initiatives are aimed at strengthening the nation’s capabilities in precision geodetic applications.

“The establishment of CORS and RCG will significantly enhance geospatial accuracy, surveying, mapping, and scientific research across the region and beyond,” he said.

The inauguration event was attended by several prominent faculty members, including Professor Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director and Advisor of the RCG, and Professor Prabodh Pandey, Registrar of IIT (ISM).

Professor Vansanta Govind Kumar Villuri, Coordinator of the RCG, explained that the CORS will provide real-time, high-precision GNSS data, benefiting various sectors such as surveying, engineering, navigation, and geosciences.

Revolutionizing Scientific Research

The high-precision data from CORS is set to revolutionize scientific domains like meteorology, upper atmospheric studies, tectonic motion, seismology, and hydrology.

The integration of CORS data will enhance coherence in geospatial data across different sectors, improving efficiency and productivity in industries that rely on accurate geospatial information.
