Jamshedpur, October 12: In a special security initiative to ensure the safety of women and girls during Durga Puja, East Singhbhum district police have deployed Shakti Commandos across Jamshedpur, with intensified surveillance at crowded puja pandals, busy marketplaces and other sensitive locations.

Acting on the directions of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ehtesham Waqarib, 12 women police personnel, supported by six vehicles, were deployed from Monday to strengthen security during the festive season.

The initiative aims to prevent eve-teasing, harassment, inappropriate behaviour and other offences against women as thousands of people visit puja pandals and participate in celebrations across the city.

With Jamshedpur preparing for the festive rush, the police have stepped up vigilance at public places where large crowds gather, particularly during the evening and night hours.

The Shakti Commandos will keep a close watch on puja pandals, major intersections, busy roads and other vulnerable stretches. Their responsibilities include monitoring suspicious activities, identifying individuals engaging in objectionable behaviour and responding to complaints related to women’s safety.

The six vehicles will enable the teams to move between sensitive locations and reach areas requiring immediate police intervention. Their visible presence is also intended to deter potential offenders and reinforce security in crowded public spaces.

Focus on Women’s Safety Amid Festive Rush

Durga Puja brings a substantial increase in public movement across Jamshedpur, with families, women, young girls and children visiting decorated pandals throughout the city.

However, congested roads, crowded entrances and busy market areas can pose challenges for security personnel seeking to identify and respond promptly to incidents of harassment.

The special deployment seeks to address these concerns by placing women police personnel closer to public spaces frequently visited by women and girls. Their presence is expected to make it easier for those facing harassment or feeling unsafe to approach the police for assistance.

Part of Wider Festive Security Arrangements

The deployment forms part of the district police’s broader efforts to maintain law and order and prevent anti-social elements from disrupting festive celebrations.

Besides keeping watch on potential offenders, the personnel will remain alert to complaints and security-related concerns arising during the Puja rush.

The district police have emphasised the need to ensure that women and girls can visit pandals, move through crowded streets and participate in festivities without fear or intimidation.

Through visible patrolling and prompt intervention, the Shakti Commando initiative aims to create a safer environment for women during Durga Puja in Jamshedpur.
