Ranchi, April 18: In a groundbreaking move, Jharkhand has become the first state in India to officially partner with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to eliminate cervical cancer. The National Health Mission (NHM) has signed an agreement with the Women Doctors Wing of IMA Jharkhand, marking a major milestone in women’s health.
Cervical cancer is the second deadliest cancer among Indian women—yet it’s one of the most preventable and treatable. Every year, around 67,000 women in India lose their lives to this disease. With early screening and treatment, these deaths can be prevented.

A Campaign Powered by Women for Women
The campaign is being led by Dr. Bharti Kashyap, Chairperson of the Women Doctors Wing, IMA Jharkhand and a recipient of the prestigious Nari Shakti Award. Under her leadership, the team has been conducting free women’s health camps across remote areas of the state since 2014.
In 2021 alone, over 5 lakh women were screened for cervical cancer under the innovative “Jharkhand Model,” developed in collaboration with the state health department. Nearly 2,800 women showing early signs of the disease received life-saving cryo treatments.
Health Minister’s Support
Jharkhand’s Health Minister Irfan Ansari, called the partnership a “historic initiative” and emphasized that it will serve as a model for other states. He has directed all district health officials to expand screening efforts and ensure they are carried out regularly.

Training, Technology, and Treatment
The campaign doesn’t stop at awareness. The state has trained its government gynaecologists in advanced cervical screening techniques and equipped 14 major government hospitals with digital colposcopes and cryo machines—ensuring treatment is not only possible but accessible.
Global Recognition for Local Hero
Taking this mission beyond borders, Dr. Bharti Kashyap will present her research on cervical cancer screening at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Annual Conference in Los Angeles this April.
