Dhanbad, April 28: Jayant Kumar Bhuyan, Jharkhand’s first international chess arbiter who hails from Jamshedpur, has set an extraordinary record by donating blood for the 125th time. His remarkable contribution to blood donation has made him a standout figure among sports personalities in the state.

Recognition for His Contribution

In recognition of his selfless service, the Jamshedpur Blood Centre honored Bhuyan for his exceptional achievement. Dr. Sanjay Choudhary, Head of the Blood Bank Centre, and Surendra Kumar Jha, the highest blood donor in Jharkhand with 171 donations, presented Bhuyan with a memento and citation during the ceremony.

Bhuyan’s achievement is especially notable as Jamshedpur, long considered an important sports hub of undivided Bihar, has not seen any athlete reach this milestone before. An office-bearer of the Jharkhand Chess Association remarked that not only in the state but across the national chess community, no player or administrator has achieved such a remarkable record of 125 blood donations.

Bhuyan, who has also been an executive member of the All Jharkhand Chess Association (AJCA) and a seasoned chess coach, began his blood donation journey in 1983 and has consistently donated since then.

He shared that he was inspired by the late SP Trivedi, the first centurion blood donor in the country, who donated blood 137 times. “Inspired by late SP Trivedi, I began donating blood 42 years ago, and till date, I enjoy immense pleasure in giving it,” Bhuyan said.

Contributions to Chess and State-Level Events

In addition to his efforts in blood donation, Bhuyan has made significant contributions to the chess community. As one of the founding members of the Jharkhand Chess Association, he has been involved in organizing numerous state, national, and international chess events, including the 44th Chess Olympiad held in Chennai in 2022 under the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

Several prominent figures from the Jharkhand Chess Association, including former treasurer Arvind Sinha, Dhanbad District Chess Association secretary Mukesh Sinha, East Singhbhum Chess Association secretary NK Tiwari, and others, congratulated Bhuyan on his achievement.
