Assault on junior lady doctor at RIMS sparks renewed security concerns

SUBHASH MISHRA

Ranchi, May 7: A junior female doctor at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi, was reportedly physically assaulted by a bystander on the evening of Tuesday, April 6, while returning from duty. The incident occurred around 8:15 PM on the hospital’s first floor, raising serious concerns about the safety of medical professionals within the institution.

The Junior Doctors Association (JDA) promptly reported the incident to the Deputy Medical Superintendent of RIMS, urging the hospital administration to file an institutional First Information Report (FIR) against the accused. In their memorandum, the JDA emphasized the urgent need for a thorough investigation and the implementation of robust security measures across the campus.

“Despite our repeated requests, RIMS administration has failed to deploy security personnel at vulnerable points within the hospital,” stated JDA representatives. “Such incidents could have been prevented with adequate security arrangements.”

A Pattern of Negligence

This assault is not an isolated incident. In September 2024, a junior doctor at RIMS was molested inside a hospital elevator, leading to a pen-down strike by medical staff. The administration responded by promising enhanced security measures, including the deployment of lift operators and armed police personnel.
However, the recurrence of such events indicates a persistent lapse in ensuring the safety of healthcare workers.
National Outcry Over Medical Staff Safety

The issue of medical staff safety gained national attention following the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024. The incident sparked nationwide protests and strikes by medical professionals, demanding stringent security measures in healthcare institutions.
The repeated incidents of violence against medical professionals at RIMS highlight an urgent need for systemic changes in hospital security protocols. Ensuring the safety of healthcare workers is paramount, not only for their well-being but also for maintaining the integrity and functionality of medical institutions.
