Dhanbad, May 23: The Department of Environmental Science & Engineering (ESE) at IIT ISM Dhanbad organized a lecture on “Plant-Based Strategies for Air Pollution” on Friday as part of the institute’s ongoing Centenary Celebrations.

Prof. Arvind K. Nema, Provost of IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi and Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Delhi, was the keynote speaker. In his address, Prof. Nema offered critical insights into the role of indigenous plant species in mitigating air pollution and strengthening urban ecological resilience.

Drawing from his extensive research in the Delhi NCR region, he emphasized how native flora can act not only as natural filters for pollutants but also as indicators of environmental stress.

The event was supported by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT ISM Dhanbad, and Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director.

It was organized under the guidance of Prof. Sunil Kumar Gupta, Dean (Student Welfare) and Professor (HAG), Department of ESE; Prof. Alok Sinha, Head of the Department of ESE and Coordinator, EIACP; and Prof. Biswajit Paul and Dr. Bishwajit Das, Programme Officer, EIACP (PC-RP), IIT ISM.

A large number of faculty members, research scholars, and M.Tech. students participated in the programme. The interactive session following the lecture spurred academic engagement and sparked collaborative ideas focused on enhancing air quality through nature-based solutions.
