Bengaluru, June 4: A joyous celebration turned tragic in Bengaluru as a stampede outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebration event claimed at least seven lives, including that of a child, and left over 25 others injured. Of the injured, six are reported to be in critical condition.

The tragedy unfolded as thousands of ecstatic fans thronged the stadium to celebrate RCB’s historic maiden IPL title, earned after an 18-year wait with a thrilling six-run win over Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad.

Despite heavy police deployment, crowd control efforts failed as the crowd swelled beyond capacity. Viral videos on social media show police resorting to mild force to manage the chaos and prevent further escalation.

Earlier, Bengaluru traffic police had already cancelled RCB’s planned open-bus victory parade citing traffic and safety concerns. However, the stadium celebration still drew overwhelming numbers of supporters, many of whom remained outside the venue in hopes of catching a glimpse of their cricketing heroes.
