Ranchi, June 13: The Indian Institute of Management Ranchi kicked off the second edition of its flagship Doctoral Research Conference (DRC) on Thursday, bringing together some of the brightest research minds from across the country. The two-day event, held on June 12–13, serves as a vibrant platform for PhD scholars to present their work, engage with experts, and refine their ideas through constructive academic dialogue.

From thought-provoking keynote speeches to in-depth research presentations and panel discussions, Day 1 of the conference was a dynamic showcase of innovation and scholarly collaboration.

Setting the Tone: Leadership and Vision

The conference opened with an address by Prof. Deepak Kumar Srivastava, Director of IIM Ranchi, who emphasized the institute’s commitment to fostering impactful and socially relevant research. Calling the DRC the “flagship event” of IIM Ranchi’s doctoral community, he praised its unique scholar-driven format and highlighted its role in shaping research that goes beyond academic walls to benefit society.

Keynote Spotlight: Marketplace as the New Laboratory

In a powerful keynote address titled “Accelerating Growth Through Business Innovation,” Prof. Rajendra Srivastava, Executive Director at the ISB Centre for Business Innovation, introduced the concept of Pracademics—the fusion of practical impact and academic rigor.

“The marketplace is the new laboratory,” he told attendees, urging scholars to apply theoretical insights to real-world problems. Drawing from examples like IndiGo, SBI YONO, Tesla, and Apple, Prof. Srivastava showcased how innovation can drive growth and redefine entire industries. He emphasized creating value for all stakeholders and encouraged researchers to “think differently, envision the future, and act now.”

Top-Tier Research Presentations

Out of 300 paper submissions, only 10 were selected for presentation, reflecting the conference’s high standards. Research topics ranged across diverse fields, including political behavior, financial systems, marketing strategies, and technology adoption.

Highlighted presentations included:

  • Heterogeneity of Chinese Imports and Productivity in Indian Manufacturing – Hariom Arora
  • Who Punishes Criminal Politicians? Economic Status, Gender, and Voter Decision – Shubhangi Jaiswal
  • Bank Undercapitalization and Borrowers’ Accounting Conservatism – Prateek Nahar
  • Systemic Risk in Indian Financial Networks: A Gravity Centrality Approach – Harshit Kumar Sharma
  • Fairness-Driven Pricing for Luxury Brands – Rajanish Chandra
  • Consumer Perception in Smartwatch Markets – Rajeev Kumar Ray

Prof. Kumar Shaurav, Chairperson of the DRC, shared that the goal was not only to showcase high-quality research but also to foster a culture where research contributes meaningfully to society. “The response from scholars, faculty, and academicians has been overwhelming,” he said.

Academic Leadership Panel: The Personal Journey of Research

A key feature of the day was the Director Discussion Panel, which brought together leading academic administrators:

  • Prof. Pawan Singh, Director, IIM Tiruchirapalli
  • Prof. Ajit Parulekar, Director, Goa Institute of Management
  • Prof. Vishal Talwar, COO, University of Southampton, Delhi
  • Prof. Deepak Kumar Srivastava, Director, IIM Ranchi

Divided into three engaging rounds, the panel explored the evolving role of research in institutional development, academia-industry engagement, and the personal transformation that doctoral studies entail. “A PhD is not just an academic milestone—it is a deeply personal and intellectual journey,” the panelists agreed, emphasizing the discipline, mindset, and leadership qualities it nurtures.

A Strong Start to a Promising Conference

Day 1 of the Doctoral Research Conference at IIM Ranchi was a vibrant mix of high-quality research, inspiring leadership insights, and meaningful academic exchange. As the conference continues into its second day, it promises to further strengthen the culture of research excellence and collaboration that IIM Ranchi proudly champions.
