Daltonganj, September 20: A 55-year-old man allegedly killed his 40-year-old son-in-law with an axe in Palamu’s Chhatarpur police station area, with police saying the exact motive behind the murder is yet to be established.

The deceased has been identified as Gandhi Bhuiyan, while the accused, his father-in-law Jagdev Bhuiyan, allegedly fled after the incident. The murder took place in a maize field in Bhikhee village on Saturday night.

Chhatarpur police station officer-in-charge Saurav Choubey said villagers informed the police on Sunday morning after spotting a body in the maize field.

Police found deep and blunt-force injuries on Gandhi’s head. His face had also been severely injured, apparently after being struck with stones, the officer said.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination at MMCH, Daltonganj, police said.

Police deny liquor angle

Choubey dismissed reports circulating locally that the murder followed a liquor-fuelled brawl between the two men.

“There was no liquor bottle—full, half-filled or empty—at the spot,” the officer said, adding that there was no evidence at the scene to suggest that alcohol consumption had triggered the murder.

He said the police had not found any liquor-related angle in the case so far.

Marital dispute being examined

According to preliminary information, Gandhi’s wife had been staying with her father. Gandhi had reportedly gone to his in-laws’ house to bring his wife back.

Sources said Jagdev was reluctant to send his daughter with Gandhi, following which an altercation allegedly took place between the two men. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the dispute.

“The police have learnt about the domestic dispute, but the actual motive behind the murder is yet to be ascertained,” Choubey said.

Police have launched an investigation and are searching for the accused. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
