IIT ISM Dhanbad celebrates National Space Day

Dhanbad, Aug 6: IIT ISM Dhanbad, in collaboration with the Regional Remote Sensing Centre-East (RRSC) of ISRO, Kolkata, celebrated National Space Day today with a program aimed at igniting scientific curiosity among students.

IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, who served as the chief guest, urged students to pursue their intellectual curiosity with dedication. He emphasized that the progression from science to engineering and eventually to technology is the foundation of national development.

The event was organized as part of the National Space Day initiative declared by the Government of India on August 23. More than 350 students from eight leading schools in Dhanbad actively participated.

Dr. A.O. Varghese, Deputy General Manager at RRSC-East, ISRO, highlighted that one of the core objectives of National Space Day is to spark interest among school students and inspire them to pursue careers in the space sector.

He also noted that ISRO’s contributions go beyond space exploration to critical societal applications such as food security and disaster management.

The technical sessions featured distinguished speakers, including Dr. Arindam Guha, Group Head at RRSC-East, who delivered a talk on ISRO’s planetary exploration missions focused on terrestrial planets.

Rajendransigh P Byali, Deputy Director of the Human Space Flight Centre, ISRO, provided an in-depth overview of India’s Human Space Programme.

Prof. Sanjit Kumar Pal from the Department of Applied Geophysics, who served as the program coordinator, welcomed the guests and shared insights into scientific activities related to remote sensing.

Dr. Niptika Jana, Assistant Professor from the Department of Applied Geophysics, proposed the vote of thanks, marking the conclusion of the event.
