Ranchi, Aug 22: The Jharkhand State Sentence Review Board, chaired by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, approved the release of 51 life-term prisoners lodged in different jails across the state. The decision was taken at the Board’s 35th meeting held at the Chief Minister’s residential office in Ranchi.

During the session, 103 cases were reviewed in detail, including 37 new proposals and 66 cases that had earlier been rejected in previous board meetings.
After examining each file, the CM gave his consent to release 51 prisoners, considering their age, conduct in jail, family and social background, as well as the recommendations of the courts, district police, jail superintendents, and probation officers.

Focus on Rehabilitation of Released Inmates
CM Soren directed officials to ensure that prisoners who have spent over 14 years in jail, are of advanced age, and have displayed good conduct be motivated to begin a new chapter in society.
He also emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan for prisoners suffering from physical or mental health issues, ensuring they receive proper treatment before release.
The Chief Minister instructed that all released prisoners must be linked with government social security schemes to support their reintegration into society.

619 Prisoners Released Since 2019
Officials informed the meeting that since 2019, 619 prisoners have been released from different prisons following board recommendations. Of these, physical verification has been completed for 558, while 61 cases are still pending.
They also reported that 470 of the released inmates have already been linked with government welfare schemes such as old-age pension, widow pension, ration cards, Ayushman Bharat health coverage, PM Awas Yojana, MGNREGA, and e-Shram cards. Efforts are underway to extend these benefits to the remaining prisoners.
