Ranchi, October 7, 2026: Usha Martin University (UMU), Ranchi, inaugurated the Usha Martin Centre for Tribal Rights & Customs (UM-CTRC) on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards strengthening academic research, dialogue and engagement on issues concerning tribal communities, their rights, customs, culture and heritage.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Alok S. Kachhap, Director, Tribal Research Institute (TRI), Ranchi, as the Chief Guest, and Dr. Shamsher Aalam, Assistant Professor, Central University of Jharkhand, as the Guest Speaker.
Focus on Tribal Knowledge and Heritage
The programme began with the dignitaries paying homage to Bhagwan Birsa Munda, followed by the formal inauguration of the Centre through ribbon-cutting and a tour of the newly established facility.
Speaking on the occasion, Alok S. Kachhap emphasised the importance of systematic research and documentation related to tribal communities. He stressed the need to approach tribal knowledge, traditions and social practices with academic sensitivity and ensure that research contributes meaningfully to understanding and preserving tribal heritage.
Dr. Shamsher Aalam highlighted the academic relevance of studying tribal communities, their cultural practices and evolving social realities. He emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary research and academic dialogue to develop a deeper understanding of tribal society and contemporary issues affecting tribal communities.
Expanding the Scope of Higher Education
Prof. Madhulika Kaushik, Pro-Chancellor, Usha Martin University, said the establishment of UM-CTRC reflects the University’s commitment to expanding the scope of higher education beyond conventional academic boundaries.
Brigadier (Dr.) Samer Vir Singh, Officiating Vice-Chancellor, Usha Martin University, highlighted the importance of creating academic platforms that connect classroom learning with the diverse social and cultural realities of the region.
In his welcome address, Registrar Dr. Shiv Pratap Verma welcomed the distinguished guests and members of the academic community and underlined the significance of establishing a dedicated Centre for Tribal Rights & Customs at the University.
The inauguration of UM-CTRC marks another initiative by Usha Martin University towards promoting inclusive academic engagement, strengthening research and creating platforms for meaningful dialogue on the cultural and social dimensions of tribal communities.
