Jamshedpur, October 7: Two alleged shooters involved in the September 26 Bindal Mall restaurant firing were injured in a police encounter in the forested stretch of Marine Drive under Sonari police station late Tuesday night.
The injured suspects, identified as Mohan Yadav and Ajit Mandal, sustained bullet injuries to their legs and were subsequently admitted to MGM Hospital.
Police recovered two pistols from the encounter site.
Shooters Allegedly Opened Fire During Weapon Recovery
City SP Lalit Meena said the encounter occurred when a police team took the two accused to the Marine Drive jungle to recover weapons allegedly used in the Bindal Mall firing.
According to police, the weapons had been hidden behind a tree in the forest. During the recovery operation, the two accused allegedly snatched a pistol from the waist of a policeman and opened fire at the police team while attempting to escape.
The police retaliated in self-defence, hitting both suspects in their legs. They were subsequently overpowered and taken into custody.
Four Injured in September 26 Restaurant Firing
The encounter followed a sustained police operation to track down the shooters allegedly involved in the September 26 firing at a restaurant inside Bindal Mall in Sonari, in which four people were injured.
The incident was captured on CCTV footage, which showed three men arriving on a motorcycle. Two of them allegedly entered the restaurant and opened fire.
Police had earlier arrested the alleged conspirator in the case and sent him to judicial custody. A search was subsequently launched for the three shooters, with a reward of ₹1 lakh each announced for information leading to their arrest.
Two Suspects Arrested After Police Operation
Acting on the directions of the SSP, a police team arrested Mohan Yadav and Ajit Mandal late Tuesday evening.
During interrogation, the duo allegedly disclosed the location where the weapons used in the crime had been concealed. They were subsequently taken to the Marine Drive jungle for weapon recovery, where the encounter took place.
The encounter site was later cordoned off. Senior police officers, including the SSP, City SP, DSP and the officer-in-charge of the concerned police station, reached the spot along with a large police contingent.
“The police team was carrying out weapon recovery based on information provided by the arrested accused when they opened fire at the police personnel. The team retaliated in self-defence, resulting in injuries to both accused. Further investigation is underway,” Meena said.
