New Delhi, Aug 27: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has intervened in the case of a 22-year-old Zimbabwean student who died at AIIMS Bathinda after being brutally assaulted in Punjab’s Bathinda district.

The student, identified as Ziweya Leeroy, was pursuing his graduation at Guru Kashi University in Talwandi Sabo.

According to officials, Leeroy was attacked on August 13, 2025, following a dispute with a university security guard.

The guard, Dilpreet Singh, allegedly assaulted him along with eight others. Despite receiving treatment for several days at AIIMS Bathinda, Leeroy succumbed to his injuries on August 21. Police have registered an FIR against the accused.

Taking suo motu cognisance of the incident, the NHRC observed that the reported facts, if accurate, highlight grave concerns over the safety of international students in India.

The Commission has issued notices to the Punjab Director General of Police and the Registrar of Guru Kashi University, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.

The NHRC has asked the authorities to explain the circumstances of the attack, the steps taken against those responsible, and the measures being implemented to safeguard foreign students on campus.

Media reports suggest that Leeroy had a heated exchange with a guard a day before the assault, which escalated into the fatal attack.
