IIT-ISM Dhanbad hosts lecture on India’s low-emission strategy

Dhanbad, Aug 28: The Department of Environmental Science & Engineering (ESE), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, organized a lecture-cum-interactive session on India’s low-emission strategy on Wednesday. The event was part of the institute’s Centenary Celebrations & Mission LiFE Series.

Sharath Kumar Pallerla, Scientist G and IPCC Focal Point, Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, was the keynote speaker. He delivered an insightful lecture on “India’s Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS): Net Zero 2070.”

Pallerla presented a comprehensive overview of India’s LT-LEDS, outlining the nation’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070. He explained the science behind climate change, discussed global frameworks such as the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement, and detailed India’s mitigation and adaptation pathways, including clean energy transition, sustainable urban development, and nature-based solutions.

Role of Finance, Technology and Research

The keynote address also highlighted the critical role of finance, technology, and capacity building in advancing low-emission strategies. Pallerla identified research opportunities in areas such as climate resilience, carbon removal, and green innovation.

Over 70 participants, including faculty members, researchers, and students, engaged in discussions on India’s low-emission development pathways and future challenges.

Institute Leadership and Participation

Prof. Manish Kumar Jain of the ESE Department welcomed the participants, stressing the importance of ministerial leadership in shaping India’s climate policies. Prof. Alok Sinha, Head of ESE and Coordinator of EIACP (PC-RP), delivered the vote of thanks, underlining the need for collective responsibility among academia, policymakers, and civil society in tackling climate change.

The programme was organized with the support of IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Deputy Director Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, and under the guidance of Prof. Alok Sinha, Prof. Manish Kumar Jain, and Prof. Suresh Pandian. Bishwajit Das, Programme Officer, EIACP (PC-RP), coordinated the event.
