THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Ranchi, Sept 28: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned Ashish Satyaavrat Sahu during his radio address Mann Ki Baat, it was a proud moment for Jharkhand. The recognition was for a young entrepreneur who has dedicated his career to preserving and promoting the tribal weaving traditions of his state through his brand Johargram.

Ashish hails from Jharkhand, where he grew up surrounded by the vibrant tribal culture of the region. After completing his studies, instead of moving away in search of conventional jobs, he chose to return to his roots. He was deeply aware of how local handloom weavers were struggling to find markets for their work. Many artisans were abandoning their craft due to low income and lack of visibility. This concern became the foundation of his vision.

Johargram launched in 2020

In 2020, Ashish launched Johargram, a venture that combines traditional weaving techniques with modern design. His workplace is based in Jharkhand, where he works closely with tribal artisans, especially from rural areas, to create garments that reflect the state’s identity. He currently resides in Ranchi, from where he manages the operations of his brand. Through this effort, Johargram has provided not just employment but also dignity to artisans who had been overlooked for years.

Johargram has grown steadily since its inception. Its products have reached markets across India and have also attracted attention internationally. From handwoven stoles and sarees to garments infused with tribal motifs, Ashish has positioned these creations in a way that appeals to urban buyers while keeping their authenticity intact. This unique approach has not only revived fading traditions but also placed Jharkhand’s cultural heritage on the global stage.

PM’s applause

Prime Minister Modi’s acknowledgement gave Ashish’s mission a national platform. “The youth of Jharkhand are showing how culture can become a strength when blended with creativity and entrepreneurship,” the Prime Minister noted. The recognition has inspired many others in the state to look at their own traditions as potential sources of livelihood and innovation.

Johargram is more than a brand

For Ashish Satyaavrat Sahu, Johargram is more than a brand—it is a movement. By empowering artisans, promoting eco-friendly fabrics, and celebrating the artistry of Jharkhand’s tribal communities, he has shown that cultural preservation and economic growth can move forward together.
