Daltonganj, Oct 1: Feminists have raised objections to the dress code announced for women and girls visiting Durga Puja pandals.
They point out that no similar guidelines have been issued for men, calling it outright discrimination. According to them, devotees are devotees, and no one should be divided or judged based on their clothing.
The Sri Kendriya Durga Puja Maha Samiti recently released a poster showing five types of clothes worn by women and girls, claiming that they do not match the tradition, customs, and culture of Hinduism.
The poster advises women to avoid such outfits while visiting the pandals, saying that Western-style clothing does not fit with the spirit and sanctity of the festival. The clothes mentioned include mini skirts, torn trousers, transparent tops, and backless blouses, among others.
Speaking to this correspondent, the president of the Samiti, Durga Johri, said:
“It is a very sincere appeal to all devotees. It is not a rule, only voluntary. I believe traditional wear for women and girls is always dignified. This is a well-meaning request.”
He further added:
“Even if our appeal is not taken in the right spirit, there is no issue. Everyone is free to enjoy the festival in the outfits they choose. Every devotee is our esteemed visitor.”
