Ranchi / New Delhi, Oct 7: In a major development in the Jharkhand land scam investigation, the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Appellate Tribunal has directed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to immediately release the BMW X7 that was seized from Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s Delhi residence earlier this year.

The order marks a significant relief for the Jharkhand Chief Minister, who has been facing an ongoing probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act in connection with alleged irregular land transactions.

Background: The January 2024 Raid

The ED had raided Soren’s residence in Delhi on January 29 2024, as part of its probe into a suspected money-laundering network tied to land deals in Ranchi.

During the search, officials seized a luxury BMW X7, ₹36.34 lakh in cash, and several documents and electronic devices. The ED later attached land parcels in Ranchi worth over ₹31 crore, which investigators allege were acquired using proceeds of crime.

The Chief Minister subsequently filed an appeal before the PMLA Appellate Tribunal, seeking the release of his seized assets, including the BMW X7.

Political and Legal Fallout

The January raid triggered political turmoil in Jharkhand. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accused Soren of evading investigation, while his party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), alleged that the ED action was politically motivated.

Despite the controversy, Soren has consistently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the investigation is an attempt to discredit his government.

Tribunal’s Order and What Lies Ahead

The PMLA Tribunal’s decision to order the release of the BMW X7 is seen as a partial victory for Soren. Legal experts suggest the order may influence future cases involving the seizure of high-value assets.

It remains to be seen whether the ED will challenge the tribunal’s decision or comply with the directive in the coming days.
