This follows opposition members’ ongoing demonstrations against the recent security breach in Parliament and their demands that Union Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement on the subject.

On the other hand 45 opposition MPs, including Congress MPs Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, and KC Venugopal, were suspended from the Rajya Sabha on Monday for obstructing Parliamentary activity.

Eleven other Members of Parliament were suspended until the Privileges Committee’s report was received, while 34 members of the Rajya Sabha were suspended for the duration of the Winter session.

The Chairman of Rajya Sabha asked the suspended members to vacate the precincts following the House’s adoption of the motion for suspension. However, the opposition members persisted in yelling slogans. The House was subsequently adjourned for the day by him.

Earlier on December 14, Derek O’Brien of TMC was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the rest of the winter session.

Pralhad Joshi, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, moved the motion to suspend the MPs in the Lok Sabha. The House had adjourned earlier, and when it reconvened around 3 pm, BJP MP Rajendra Agrawal, in the chair, said that the MPs had been breaking the rules.

“You have been repeatedly requested not to bring placards to the House,” he said.

Afterwards, he gave their names, and Joshi made a motion to suspend them for the remainder of the winter session, which concludes on December 22. Later, the motion was adopted by a voice vote.

The meeting was adjourned for the day a few minutes after 3 pm after 30 members were suspended for the remaining duration of the session and three other members were suspended till the Privileges Committee report was received in the contempt of the House case.

Lok Sabha MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury speaking about his suspension said, “All leaders, including me, have been suspended. We have been demanding for days to reinstate our MPs who were suspended earlier and that the Home Minister come to the House and give a statement (on Parliament security breach).”

Notably, one Rajya Sabha MP and 13 Lok Sabha MPs were suspended for ‘unruly conduct’ in Parliament on December 14, the day following the security breach in Parliament.
