Jamshedpur, Nov 22: In a swift and high-impact operation, the forest department on Saturday morning uncovered an illegal marine coral smuggling racket at Hotel Virat under the Sakchi police station area.

The sudden raid sent shockwaves across the bustling commercial locality.

Officials apprehended four individuals from the spot, including two identified suspects—Hari Charan Gop and Pramod Kaibarta.

The identities of the other two accused are being withheld pending further investigation.

Sources revealed that the department had received a tip-off regarding a clandestine deal involving marine corals being executed inside one of the hotel rooms.

Acting promptly, the team stormed the premises and recovered corals believed to be trafficked from coastal regions.

Authorities are currently assessing the seized items to determine the exact quantity and market value.

During initial interrogation, the detained individuals reportedly disclosed crucial information that may help trace the broader network behind the illegal trade.

Officers indicated that more arrests and further action are likely as the investigation progresses.

The incident has raised serious concerns over the misuse of centrally located urban establishments for wildlife trafficking.

Smuggling of marine corals is not only a grave legal offence but also poses a significant threat to fragile marine ecosystems.

While the department’s timely action has been widely appreciated, conservation experts insist that dismantling the entire chain—from sourcing to commercial transport—must remain the priority.

Officials have assured that the case is being handled with utmost seriousness and that stringent measures will follow to bring the entire smuggling ring to justice.
