PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Dec 19: In a brazen case of ATM fraud, a 69-year-old senior citizen was cheated of Rs 37,000 after an unidentified youth allegedly stole his ATM card and withdrew money from his account at a bank kiosk in Telco.

According to the complaint lodged with Telco police, the victim, Kamal Kumar Sen, had visited the IDBI Bank ATM near Plaza Market in Telco around 11.48 am on Thursday to withdraw cash.

After completing a transaction of 1,000, an unknown youth entered the kiosk and deliberately diverted his attention.

Seizing the moment, the accused slipped away with Sen’s ATM card and exited the booth.

The suspect fled the spot on a bike before the victim could realise the theft.

When Sen later reached the IDBI Bank branch to block his card, bank officials informed him that Rs 37,000 had already been withdrawn using the stolen card.

A written complaint has been submitted to the police, following which an investigation has been initiated.

Officers are scrutinising CCTV footage from the ATM and nearby areas to trace the accused.

The incident has once again raised concerns over ATM safety, particularly for elderly customers, and serves as a reminder to remain alert against distraction-based fraud while using banking facilities.
