Jamshedpur, Dec 20: In a shocking incident, the parents of a deceased four-month-old baby boy, carried his body in a bag from Chaibasa Sadar Hospital to Nuamundi in West Singhbhum in the absence of a dead body ambulance.
Before taking the infant’s body in the bag, the bereaved parents waited hours together while requesting the hospital authority to provide the dead body ambulance, but after an inordinate delay, they were compelled to carry the body in an indignified manner.

Infant Brought from Nuamundi, Dies After Treatment
A resident of Balijori village in Nuamundi Block, Dimba Chatumba had brought his seriously-ailing son to Chaibasa Sadar Hospital, travelling over 60 kms on Thursday. The infant died on Friday afternoon.
As Chatumba was extremely poor, he could not afford a private vehicle to carry the body back home. Hence, he tried to avail the ambulance facility from the government-run hospital, but due to inordinate delay, he had to carry the body in a vegetable bag.
Civil Surgeon Gives Hospital’s Version
Civil Surgeon, Chaibasa, Bharti Minz, however, had a different version of the sordid episode.
“We have a dead body ambulance but it was away in Majhgaon block for delivering a body from the hospital. We had asked the parents concerned to wait for the ambulance to return. But instead of waiting further, they took the infant’s body in a bag instead,” said Minz while talking to The Jharkhand Story.
The Civil Surgeon further stated that the infant was brought to the hospital on December 18 in a serious condition.

“At the Sadar Hospital, the infant was diagnosed to be suffering from meningitis. We referred him MGM Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) Jamshedpur, but the father did not do that and instead insisted on keeping his son at the Sadar Hospital only. The infant died on Friday afternoon,” explained the Civil Surgeon, suggesting that the parents were not serious enough about the infant’s treatment.
