Daltonganj, Aug. 6: A photograph stored on a mobile phone proved to be the turning point in a bike theft investigation in Jharkhand’s Palamu district, leading police to recover an illegal country-made firearm and book two young men under the Arms Act in addition to theft charges.
The incident came to light in Sahad village under the Lesliganj police station limits, where police had arrested two youths in connection with the theft of a motorcycle.
The accused have been identified as Rahul Kumar and Prince Kumar, both in their early twenties.
Addressing a press conference, Palamu Superintendent of Police Kapil Chaudhary said the stolen motorcycle was recovered from an under-construction house in Sahad village during the investigation.
Initially, the duo was booked only in connection with the motorcycle theft.
Mobile phone photo changes course of investigation
The investigation took a dramatic turn when police examined the mobile phones seized from the accused.
“While checking their mobile phones, our team came across a photograph showing the two accused posing with a country-made pistol (desi katta),” the SP said.
Based on the photograph, police conducted searches at the houses of the accused and recovered a loaded country-made pistol.
Arms Act charges added
Following the recovery of the firearm, police invoked provisions of the Arms Act against both accused.
The two now face charges of motorcycle theft, possession of stolen property and illegal possession of a loaded country-made firearm.
SP Chaudhary said what initially appeared to be a routine bike theft case expanded into a more serious criminal investigation after the mobile phone photograph led investigators to the illegal weapon.
The accused have been taken into custody and further investigation is underway.
