Dhanbad, December 28: A newborn baby boy born to a tribal woman was allegedly stolen from the maternity ward of Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH), Dhanbad.

The incident occurred at around 8.15 pm on December 27, when a woman posing as a nurse entered the ward and told the family that the infant needed to be taken for a medical check-up.

How the Baby Was Taken Away

According to the family, the baby’s grandmother took the child and accompanied the woman out of the ward. Once outside, the woman took the baby into her arms, saying she would return after the examination. However, she never came back with the infant.

When the child was not returned by the next morning, the family raised an alarm.

Hospital Alerts Police

SNMMCH Superintendent Dr D. K. Gindauria informed the police immediately after the incident came to light and directed hospital authorities to begin a search.

“After examining CCTV footage of the hospital, it was found that a woman and a man were involved in the theft. Police have started an investigation, and we hope the child will be recovered soon,” Dr Gindauria said.

Organised Gang Suspected

The superintendent said the incident appeared to be the work of an organised gang involved in stealing newborns from hospitals.

Details of the Victim Family

The victim’s mother, Sarita Marandi, a resident of Maniyadih village under Tundi block in Dhanbad district, was admitted to the hospital on December 24. She delivered a baby boy on December 25.

Police Investigation Underway

Saraidhela police station officer-in-charge Manjit Kumar said an investigation is being carried out on the basis of CCTV footage and efforts are underway to trace and recover the missing newborn.
