Daltonganj, February 2: In a macabre incident triggered by suspicion of black magic in Palamu district, a para legal volunteer (PLV) played the role of a Good Samaritan and saved the life of a young girl who survived a brutal axe attack that claimed three lives.
The incident took place at Purani Bathan Kusri hamlet under Aasehar panchayat, where three members of a family—two men and a woman—were hacked to death. A young girl, later identified as Mamta Kumari, survived the attack but was found lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts on her neck.
PLV Reaches Spot Before Police
Para legal volunteer Chandradeo Prajapati of Sundi panchayat reached the spot before the police and provided immediate help to the injured girl.

Speaking to The Jharkhand Story Network, Prajapati said that on Sunday morning, he was on his way to Jhalkhandi temple to mark his daughter’s birthday when he received a phone call informing him about the triple murder and a critically injured girl gasping for life.
Dropping his plan, he first returned home and then rushed on his bike to Kusri hamlet, around 5 km away, without knowing the full extent of the tragedy.
Immediate Life-Saving Effort
“I saw three bodies—two men and a woman—lying there. Beside them was a young girl bleeding profusely from her neck. Every minute was crucial,” Prajapati said.
With no medical help available, he used his gamcha to tightly wrap around the girl’s neck to stop the bleeding.
He then took the injured girl and her bhabhi as pillion riders on his bike and sped to Aasehar Chowk. A village doctor, Sharma, provided cotton and bandages, offering timely first aid.
The girl was later rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Panki. Sources said that without Prajapati’s prompt action, the death toll could have risen.
Police and Officials Reach Later
Sources confirmed that Prajapati was the first to reach the site and also informed an ASI of Panki police station. Police teams, including SDPO Lesliganj Manoj Kumar Jha, reached the spot later.
On Sunday, three members of the family were allegedly killed over suspicion that the family head was practising black magic. The lone survivor escaped death due to swift medical assistance.

DLSA Praises PLV’s Role
District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Secretary Rakesh Ranjan praised Prajapati’s courage and presence of mind, calling his act exemplary.
“It was a brutal daylight murder of three people. Many would have frozen in fear, but our PLV rose to the occasion and proved that humanity is still alive,” he said.
On Monday, Ranjan visited Mamta Kumari at MMCH Daltonganj and assured all possible medical assistance. He said she would be covered under the victim compensation scheme and provided adequate financial help.
The girl lost her father, mother and brother in the violent incident allegedly linked to dain-bisahi (witchcraft suspicion).
Humanity Amid Tragedy
Ranjan said the actions of PLV Chandradeo Prajapati should inspire others. “Our PLV proved his mettle in the most critical situation,” he added.
