PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Feb 19: Railway authorities on Thursday carried out an anti-encroachment drive in the Kitadih and Golpahari areas, demolishing more than 22 shops built on railway land as part of efforts to speed up redevelopment work at Tatanagar Railway Station.

The move is aimed at easing traffic congestion around the station and facilitating the expansion of passenger amenities.

The operation was conducted under tight security, with personnel from the local police and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) deployed at the site. Shopkeepers were allowed to remove their belongings before the structures were demolished using heavy machinery.

Action in compliance with High Court directives

Railway Land Department official Upendra Singh said the drive was carried out in compliance with the directives of the Jharkhand High Court.

He said clearing the encroachments would help streamline traffic flow, improve parking facilities, and support planned beautification and infrastructure upgrades in and around the station premises.

Traders raise rehabilitation concerns

However, several affected traders expressed dissatisfaction with the action, alleging that rehabilitation measures referred to in court proceedings have not been clearly communicated to them.

Some shopkeepers claimed the sudden demolition has put their livelihoods at risk.

While railway officials maintain that the clearance is necessary for modernising the station area, traders said they are considering legal options if their rehabilitation concerns are not addressed.
