Venomous banded krait rescued near bus stand, released in PTR forest

Banded krait released into the forest after being rescued from near a mobile phone shop at Bareysarn under Palamu Tiger Reserve.

Daltonganj, May 17: The quick response team of the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR), led by Bareysarn Range forester-in-charge Paramjeet Tiwary, rescued a highly venomous snake identified as a banded krait on Saturday night.

The deadly snake was found near a mobile phone shop at the Bareysarn bus stand area, prompting local residents to alert forest officials.

The banded krait is a neurotoxic snake, and its bite can prove fatal without immediate medical treatment.

Forest officials said growing public awareness has helped prevent harm to snakes, as residents now contact nearby forest offices or beat guards rather than attack the reptiles.

Sources said more than half a dozen snake rescues have been carried out in the Bareysarn range in the last two months alone, with Paramjeet Tiwary and his team successfully handling the operations.

Officials recalled one of the most challenging recent rescue operations at a government school in Bareysarn, where a snake repeatedly disappeared and reappeared over a week, complicating the rescue.

PTR Appeals for Caution During Changing Weather

PTR Deputy Director (South Division) Kumar Ashish urged people to remain cautious during the current weather conditions marked by heat and rainfall, especially as weather alerts continue to be issued.

He appealed to residents not to attempt handling snakes on their own.

“No one should try hands-on handling of snakes. It is risky and life-threatening,” the officer said, adding that rescue operations should be left to trained PTR teams.
