Daltonganj, May 24: In a compassionate gesture amid the scorching summer heat, volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) at Yodh Singh Namdhari Mahila College in Daltonganj installed an earthen water pot for birds on a mango tree inside the college campus.

The initiative was led by the professor-in-charge, Dr Mohini Gupta, along with her team of teachers and NSS volunteers. The mango tree, located within the campus, shelters a couple of hundred birds during the night.

Birds Struggle for Water During Heatwave

Daltonganj and other parts of Palamu district are currently reeling under an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring above 45 degrees Celsius. In such extreme weather conditions, birds are among the worst affected due to the scarcity of water sources.

Speaking to this correspondent, Dr Mohini Gupta said, “Our team of NSS volunteers made a makeshift staircase by placing one chair over another, and one volunteer stood on it to tie the earthen water pot to a branch of the tree for the birds.”

College Appreciated for Unique Initiative

Sources said Yodh Singh Namdhari Mahila College is perhaps the first college in Daltonganj to undertake such an initiative for birds during the severe summer season.

The effort by the NSS volunteers has drawn appreciation for highlighting the importance of protecting birds and ensuring water availability for avians during extreme heat conditions.
