RANCHI, June 25: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday accused the Jharkhand government of jeopardising the future of students following the discontinuation of the long-standing local quota for Jharkhand students at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra. The party demanded the resignation of Education Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu, holding him responsible for the issue.
Addressing the media, BJP state spokesperson Sandeep Verma alleged that the state government had failed to protect the interests of Jharkhand students, resulting in the abolition of the 50 per cent local quota at BIT, Mesra.
650 students likely to be affected
Verma claimed that nearly 650 students from Jharkhand who earlier benefited from the local quota would be affected this year. He said students from the state would now have to compete with candidates from across the country for admission, making it more difficult for them to secure seats.

Higher ranks now needed for admission
Referring to the ongoing JoSAA counselling process, Verma alleged that the government’s policies had deprived students in Jharkhand of their rightful opportunities. According to him, candidates who previously secured admission with an All India Rank of around 84,000 would now need a rank of around 53,000 to gain admission, placing deserving students at a disadvantage.
Government accused of misleading students
The BJP spokesperson alleged that while the BIT administration was attributing the issue to the state government, the government itself was misleading students instead of resolving the matter. He said the decision would force talented students from Jharkhand to seek admissions in institutions outside the state.
Holding Education Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu morally responsible, Verma demanded his immediate resignation and urged the government to take prompt steps to restore the interests of Jharkhand students.
