Jamshedpur, July 8: Two women have alleged that their car was attacked and their driver assaulted on the Tata-Ranchi National Highway after they were allegedly chased by two youths in an SUV. The incident has also sparked questions over the police response, with the victims claiming officers reached the spot around 25 minutes after they alerted the emergency helpline.
Women Allege They Were Chased and Car Was Vandalised
According to the women, they were travelling from Jamshedpur to Hazaribagh when two youths in a Scorpio began following their vehicle in the Dasham Falls police station area.
They alleged that the youths forcibly stopped their car, smashed its windows, and assaulted the driver. Frightened by the incident, the women immediately called the Dial-100 emergency helpline and sought police assistance.
The victims claimed that despite the distress call, police did not reach the spot for nearly 25 minutes.
Accused Flee as Locals Gather
Before police arrived, local residents gathered at the scene, prompting the two accused to flee, the women alleged.
Dasham Falls police later reached the spot, took the victims to the police station, recorded details of the incident, and seized the damaged vehicle. An investigation has been initiated.
Two Youths Identified, Legal Action Underway
During the preliminary investigation, police identified one of the accused as Rajkumar Mahto. The second accused is also reported to be from the same locality. Both are said to be between 18 and 19 years old.
Police have summoned both youths to the police station for questioning and have initiated legal proceedings in connection with the incident.
Safety Concerns Raised
The incident has raised concerns over the safety of travellers, particularly women, on the Tata-Ranchi National Highway.
The victims expressed dissatisfaction over the alleged delay in the police response and demanded swift action against the accused.
Police said the case is being investigated from all angles and that further action will be taken based on the findings.
