Jamshedpur, July 29: An eatery owner was critically injured after unidentified gunmen allegedly opened fire on him in a suspected targeted attack in Adityapur of Seraikela-Kharsawan district late on Tuesday night.
Police suspect the attack may have stemmed from personal rivalry, though they said all possible angles are being investigated.
Gunmen open fire near railway underpass
The victim, Vishal Gorai, proprietor of Gorai Hotel, sustained a bullet injury to his waist and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under treatment.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 10.15 pm when Gorai was returning home through the railway underpass. A group of eight to ten unidentified assailants, who were allegedly lying in wait, suddenly emerged and opened indiscriminate fire.
One of the bullets struck Gorai in the waist, causing him to collapse on the road.
Residents rush victim to hospital
Hearing the gunshots, local residents rushed to the spot and shifted the injured businessman to the hospital before informing the police.
A team from Adityapur police station reached the scene shortly afterwards and began an extensive investigation. Officers collected forensic evidence, recorded statements of eyewitnesses and started examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to identify the attackers and reconstruct the sequence of events.
Police probe personal rivalry, raids underway
Confirming the incident, Adityapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anjani Kumar said the preliminary investigation points towards personal enmity as a possible motive.
However, he emphasised that investigators have not ruled out any angle and are conducting a comprehensive probe.
Police have launched raids at multiple suspected hideouts to trace and arrest those involved in the firing.
The incident has triggered concern among residents and the local business community in Adityapur, with many demanding the immediate arrest of the assailants and enhanced police patrolling in the area.
Investigators expressed confidence that the accused would be identified and arrested soon with the help of technical evidence, CCTV footage and the ongoing search operations.
