Daltonganj, September 8: Police in Latehar district have seized around 920 grams of ganja packed into cigarette rolls and arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the alleged sale of the contraband.
The seizure was made by Baariyatu police, who also recovered wrappers allegedly meant for rolling ganja into cigarettes. Police said the case has brought to light an unusual method of packaging and allegedly selling cannabis in the area.
Man arrested, sent to judicial custody
Baariyatu police station officer-in-charge Prabhat Kumar Das said the arrested accused has been identified as Aman Kumar, a village confectioner.
According to police, Kumar was arrested following a specific tip-off about the alleged sale of ganja-filled cigarette rolls. He was subsequently forwarded to judicial custody.
Police said the seized cigarette rolls were packed under two different brand names. The sample will be sent for forensic examination to determine whether the rolls contain only ganja or a mixture of ganja and tobacco.

Police follow NDPS procedures
The police said the raid was conducted after completing the required procedures under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. These included making a pre-raid entry relating to the drug offence, ensuring the presence of a magistrate and independent witnesses, and informing the suspected person about his legal rights during the search.
Police sources said users commonly refer to a ganja-filled cigarette as a “joint”, while a cigarette containing a mixture of tobacco and cannabis is known as a “spliff”.
According to the sources, a single ganja-filled cigarette reportedly sells for around Rs 40-42, although the price may vary depending on demand and quantity.
Father already in jail in ganja case
Police said Kumar’s father, Naresh Prasad, has been lodged in Latehar jail since 2024 following the alleged recovery of 64 kg of ganja from him.
The latest seizure has prompted police to examine whether the cigarette-roll method was part of a wider local distribution network. However, the police have not indicated any confirmed link beyond the arrested accused at this stage.
